Ultrasound – Definition
In dentistry, Ultrasound can be used to treat Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ). It is a treatment where deep heat is applied to an affected area to relieve soreness or improve mobility. Ultrasonic Cleaning uses high frequency sound waves to gently remove deposits, such as tartar and stain, from the teeth. Ultrasonic Cleaners (scalers) can only remove roughly 50% of total tartar buildup so hand scaling must follow. People who wear pacemaker cannot get ultrasonic scaling because the ultrasonic sound can interfere with the function of the pacemaker.
