Topical Anesthetic – Definition
In dentistry, a Topical Anesthetic refers to ointments, creams, lotions and jellies that produces mild anesthesia (numbing effects) when applied to a tissue surface. Topical anesthetics are applied to mouth tissues with a swab to numb an area in preparation for administering an injectable local anesthetic, such as Novocain. Topical anesthetics may also be used to soothe painful mouth sores. The duration of a topical anesthetic might depend on the type and amount applied, but is usually about half an hour.
