Sealants – Definition
In dentistry, a Sealant is a thin, clear, plastic resin substance that is applied to the biting surfaces of teeth to prevent decay. Sealants, such as composite materials, are also used to seal the decay-prone pits and grooves of children’s teeth to prevent bacterial decay. The chewing surfaces of the premolars and molars, or back teeth, remain hot spots for bacteria to gather as they are hard to reach by toothbrush bristles. Thus, dental sealants shield these areas from bacteria and offer further protection from decay by blocking food and bacteria access to the tooth enamel.
