Saliva – Definition
In dentistry, Saliva is a clear fluid in the mouth containing water, enzymes, bacteria, mucus, viruses, blood cells and undigested food particles. It is the clear, natural lubricating fluid in the mouth. It moisturizes our mouth and our food to make chewing and swallowing easier. It also rinses sugar, bacteria and other harmful substances out of our mouths. Saliva is produced in the salivary glands, which on average produces one and a half liters of saliva a day.
