Plaque – Definition
In dentistry, Plaque is a colorless, sticky film composed of undigested food particles mixed with saliva and bacteria that constantly forms on the teeth. It can be removed by daily brushing and flossing. However, if plaque accumulates, it can turn in to tartar or calculus and is the main factor in causing dental cavities and periodontal disease. As plaque hardens into calculus, it leads to the formation of a tough, crusty deposit that cannot then be removed by brushing or flossing. When tartar collects above the gum line, the gum tissue can become swollen or may bleed. This is called gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease. One should visit their dentist regularly for professional cleanings and oral exams.
