Occlusion – Definition
In dentistry, Occlusion refers to any contact between the biting or chewing surfaces of upper and lower teeth. Included are the relationship of chewing movements to the jaw joints, and how the teeth interdigitate (fit together) specifically to allow for chewing function and sometimes cause painful or dangerous dysfunction. Malocclusion is the misalignment of teeth and jaws and can cause number of health and dental problems not just with teeth, but with gums as well. Some of the treatments for different occlusal (biting surface) problems include tooth adjustments, replacement of teeth or the use of fixed appliances, known as orthodontic or dental braces, to adjust the occlusion.
