Nightguard – Definition
In dentistry, a Nightguard, also known as an occlusal (biting surface) guard, is a removable acrylic (plastic) appliance that fits over the upper and lower teeth used to minimize the effects of grinding the teeth or joint problems (TMD) during sleep. Some Nightguards can be bought at a pharmacy while others require fabrication by a dental technician. People who wake up with sore muscles, facial weakness, or a jaw that is 'locked' are good candidates for this device. If you are experiencing any symptom defined by a term, you should seek the advice of your dental practitioner.
