Malocclusion – Definition
In dentistry, Malocclusion refers to a condition in which a persons teeth are out of alignment, crooked, or crowded. It is the improper alignment of biting or chewing surfaces of upper and lower teeth or misalignment of the jaw itself. In an overbite condition, the upper jaw is longer than the lower jaw. In an underbite condition, the the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. Left untreated, a malocclusion not only affects the persons appearance, it can also lead to TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems and an increased risk of decay and gum disease.
