Karat – Definition
In dentistry, Karat is use to specify the pure gold content of an alloy based on the parts of pure gold in 24 parts of alloy. For example, 24-karat gold is 100% pure and 18-karat gold is 75% pure gold. In 18-karat gold, there are 18 parts of gold and 6 parts of other alloy particles. Karat is generally used in dentistry where alloys are used in dental solders. Gold filings cost more than most other materials – roughly six to ten times more expensive than amalgam (silver) filings.
