In dentistry, a Hygienist is a licensed, auxiliary dental professional who is both an oral health educator and clinician who uses preventive, therapeutic and educational methods to prevent, detect and treat diseases of the oral cavity. Dental hygiene is an important profession in the dental health care field. Local dental regulations determine the duties hygienists are able to perform. In most jurisdictions, hygienists work for a dentist. The more thorough and effective the hygienist, the more likely it is the patient can steer clear of unpleasant dental procedures.
