Halitosis – Definition
In dentistry, Halitosis is an oral health condition characterized by occasional or chronic bad breath. In most cases it is caused by oral bacteria, which have accumulated on the person’s tongue and also between and around their teeth. Common conditions also include dental cavities where germs can multiply and release foul odors, other dental or gum related conditions, or simply poor dental hygiene. Dental decay at the roots of the teeth may result in abscesses in the gums with foul-smelling pus, giving an objectionable odor to the breath. The teeth should be cleaned twice a day, especially before going to bed at night. In case of decaying teeth and swollen and bleeding gums, a dentist should be consulted.
