Gingivitis – Definition
In dentistry, Gingivitis represents the first stage of periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation of the gum tissue without any bone loss. It usually begins with plaque build up in the mouth and may end — if not properly treated — with periodontal disease and tooth loss due to destruction of the tissue that surrounds and supports the teeth. Many people think it is normal for gums to bleed when brushing, which is not true. Gingivitis is the result of chronic infection caused by plaque bacteria and requires immediate treatment to prevent a more destructive forms of gum disease.
