Crown – Definition
In dentistry, a Crown refers to the portion of a tooth above the gum line that is normally covered by, and including, enamel. It is also a dental restoration covering all or most of the natural tooth. The artificial crown (cap) can be made of various materials, such as porcelain (dental ceramic), metal (gold or other metal alloy), or a combination of both. The crown is actually cemented directly on top of the damaged tooth. Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth’s new outer surface.
